I’ve got a Facebook fan page – now what?

You’ve probably been told that as a business owner you should be on Facebook and Twitter. Possibly, you’ve even started a Facebook business page. You’ve invited your closest friends and family and thought it would naturally grow from there. Although Facebook is one of the most popular social media utilities and just about everyone who’s anyone is on it, they don’t seem to be on your page. What’s going on? What are you doing wrong?

Here’s the deal: In order to have a successful business page you need two things – followers and engagement. Here are some suggestions for getting both.

Boosting followership

  1. Spread the word. It goes without saying, if you don’t let your clientele know you’re there then they might never find you. Use your contact list or monthly newsletter to let your customers know about your page. Offer giveaways, coupons or donations to inspire ‘Likes.’ If you’re having trouble getting started, ask your friends and family to follow and engage with you until things take off.
  2. Add a call-to-action link on your business’ website. Another great way of letting your customers know about your Facebook fan page is through your business’ website. Even better, add a direct link on the welcome page asking customers for ‘Likes.’ You might be surprised by how many followers find you this way.

Engaging with followers

  1. All business and no play make your business’ followers shy away. Believe it or not, your customers don’t want to just read about the product or service you offer all the time. A great way to create loyal brand followers is by giving them a little more personality. Share something fun, intriguing or profound. It’ll give your customers an opportunity to meet the person behind the brand.
  2. Respond – always. There’s truly nothing worse than posing a question and being flat out ignored. Not responding to your Facebook followers’ comments and requests is the equivalent of a virtual slap in the face. You’re better off not having a social media platform at all if you don’t have the time to manage it. I don’t say this to be rude – it’s true. The purpose of your social media platform is to nurture your clientele, not offend them. Take this as the perfect opportunity to make them feel truly appreciated.
  3. Share positive testimonials on your fan page. Your Facebook fan page is the perfect place to share the positive reviews that your business receives. You can share them by creating a direct link to your website’s testimonial page, or copy and paste them into a special spot on your Facebook page. A word of caution, though – don’t just post testimonials. It will look as though you are patting yourself on the back. A little self-promotion doesn’t hurt, but too much can get annoying.
