7 Twitter ideas you can flat out ignore

Twitter is just over 5 years old, and it has already has 300 million users. Twitter has single-handedly changed the way we communicate, but since it’s still in its infancy, the rules of engagement are changing all the time. There are, however, some previously held Twitter ideas that you can now simply ignore.

  1. 140 characters just aren’t enough. I need more. One of the reasons it took so long for Twitter to grow is because people believed that communication in 140 characters and less was not possible. It took Now Twitter sees nearly a billion tweets per week. Learning how to use 140 characters to send your message is an art form – you just have to learn how to do it effectively.
  2. Twitter isn’t really made for businesses. Many business owners believe that Twitter is a personal tool and, therefore, inappropriate for businesses. Being personable and real is what most customers are looking for today. There are so many big business success stories on Twitter, including Dell and HP.
  3. Twitter lingo is too complex to understand. Yes, the lingo can be overwhelming in the beginning, but once you understand what they mean, it gets easy.
  4. Facebook is a better option for me. Facebook has over 600 million users, but choosing one social media utility over another could be foolish. Twitter and Facebook cannot be substitutes for one another; they operate completely differently and offer entirely different value to their users.
  5. I won’t find new customers on Twitter. So many businesses think it’s too hard to find a new customer base on Twitter. That kind of thinking won’t get you anywhere. If you have a product or service of value, you should have no problem finding people who’ll like it. In fact, you’ll likely find more people on Twitter than by traditional methods – plus it’s free.
  6. The more followers I have, the more sales I’ll make. Having too many followers can get extremely confusing, especially if not from your target audience. Focus your attention on finding quality followers, rather than a large number of followers.
  7. Twitter is awesome. I don’t need anything else. Yes, Twitter is awesome, but it’s not the end all be all. It requires patience, a lot of effort and perseverance and can be quite successful, but you still have to incorporate other marketing techniques as well.

Keep checking back as we offer up more helpful Twitter tips. And don’t give up. Twitter might just be one of the greatest social media utilities out there.
